Kate Winslet film 'Little Children'. What is the significance of the blue nails?

In the bit where they're all having dinner together, and the wife drops her fork on the floor to see if her hubby and KW are playing footsie under the table, she scrambles forward and stares at KWs blue painted toe nails. i think becuase she is this classic suburban housewife and this is kind of a childish eccentric thing she i mildly horrified

I just had the feeling it was showing a juxtaposition between Kate's character and Jennifer's character. Jennifer was the more sophisticated type, while Kate was kind of frumpy and a little eccentric. I think when Jennifer's character (Kathy) realized what was going on between the two of them and she climbs down there and sees those toe nails, it's like a further jab to the heart. Not only is her husband cheating on her, but he's cheating on her with a woman who paints her toe nails blue, for goodness sake.





As for the ending, it caught me a little off guard, but I thought it was appropriate. The movie had a certain realism. And the fact that he never shows, and she realizes what a fool she was to think this affair had actual substance, portrays a bit of reality instead of the Hollywood fiction, we always see.





I'm not sure if you've ever seen the film ';In the Bedroom,'; but it is by the same director and is quite a good film as well. It is along the same lines. Sort of a psychological study of the aftermath of a traumatic event. The ending is somewhat similar, so if you didn't like the ending of ';Little Children'; enough that it messed up the entire film for you, then it might not be your cup of tea. If you still liked ';Little Children'; even with the ';daft'; ending, then you might also like this film.

I saw Kate in an interview of her latest movie and I saw she had blue nails too and wondered what was up with that???
