Smashed thumb ! its blue under nail . A friend told me to make hole in nail to release presure.Thing 2 do ?

Reading some of these responses is kind of funny...

Yes, bleeding beneath the nailbed builds pressure. Yes, that pressure can be bad. Yes, it can cause worse troubles than not relieving the pressure.

The bleeding is called a ';subungual hematoma'; it does require drainage.

To drain, clean and scrub the site with soap and running water. Dry it well. Take a regular paperclip and heat the tip in a lighter (any really hot flame, actually). Then GENTLY touch the hot paperclip to the nail (do so perpendicular to the nail). Apply very gentle pressure, and the hot paperclip will melt through the nail.

Be very, very careful. It is very easy to go to far and hit the nailbed, and this will hurt like heck (it is going to hurt no matter what, but you'll know if it touches the nailbed). When the paperclip is pulled back, the blood will flow out. Make two or three holes total, and when done, squeeze the finger to push more blood out. Most of the blood will come out, but it is OK for a little to remain.

Then dress the nail with a band-aid to keep any contaminants out. You can put triple antibiotic or Neosporin on, but it isn't necessary. Be careful with the finger for a while.Smashed thumb ! its blue under nail . A friend told me to make hole in nail to release presure.Thing 2 do ?
You would think that making a hole in the affected nail to release the pressure would be the best course of action but actually, the best thing to do is to leave the nail alone. By creating a hole in the nail is just another way for bacteria to enter your body and possibly blood stream. As the nail grows, so will the discolored area under the nail until pretty soon you won't be able to see that the nail was even damaged. Good luck.Smashed thumb ! its blue under nail . no dont do that. it is normal to be blue under the nail. it may even turn purple or black. the nail could eventually come off but you dont have to make a hole in the nail to release pressure.....besides what pressure could you possibly be releasing?

It has happened to me many of time just relax and take tylenol or something like that for pain then give it a few days. if it starts getting darker in color (the nail) it will eventually come off and it will come off by itself or when it gets loose enough just pull it off. it will sting a little but not for more than a minute. GOOD LUCK
you should leave it alone. there is no pressure. it is swelling cause the bruse( loose blood from broken blood vessles) is irritating and causing inflimatin on surrounding tissues. so just leave it alone and dont mess with the nail. it will fall off when it is ready,
Please don't do that! It's turned blue because it is bruised underneath the nail. You can apply ice to the area if it's painful or swollen and take anti-inflammatories, such as Advil, as well.
only do this if it's hurting bad. You can relieve the pressure but at risk for introducing infection. Especially since there is a rise in resistant staph infections. If you can avoid, do that.
i wouldn't. if you get an infection under your nail, they might have to remove it. it might come off on it's own, it might not.
